If you're looking for a good book, try a few of my favorites.
J.D. Robb. Naked in Death. Berkely, 1995. Futuristic Romantic Detective story set in New York "fifteen minutes" into the future. Dark, sexy, suspenseful. Start with this one and be prepared to read through the rest of the series.
Dick Francis. Break In. Fawcett, 1986. British mystery. Set in the world of steeplechasing. Dick Francis doesn't write so much about horses as he does about people, their loves, their fears and their strengths. His heros stay with you for along time. Every Francis book is a treat.
Margot Early. The Keeper. Harlequin Superromance #668. 1995. Contemporary Romance. Grace's British husband married her for a Green Card. Or did he? A year after she leaves, Grace learns of the disturbing year Zac has endured--something he doesn't completely remember. Does their marriage stand a chance?
Mary Stewart. Romantic Suspense. Although all of Stewart's work is exceptional, these two are my favorites:
Touch Not the Cat. Coronet Books, 1977. Through their special thought communication, Bryony's "lover" calls her home to face her father's death. There's a murder and a legacy involved, and Bryony will finally learn the identity of the man she's only known through her thoughts.
Airs Above the Ground. William Morrow. 1965. Vanessa is very much in love, but astonished to see her husband in a news clip from Austria when he said he was traveling to Sweden on business! A delicate personal mission turns out to involve two dead men, a circus and danger to both Vanessa's life and her marriage.
Melanie Rawn. Dragon Prince. Daw. 1988. Fantasy Romance. This is the beginning of a saga, but, in my opinion, the best of the series. Rohan must hide his love for the princess whle he builds an empire. Political intrigue, romance and adventure spun together in an awesome tale.
Sara Blayne. Duel of the Heart. Zebra, 1986. Regency. The Duke of Rathbourne survived the Battle of Talavera only through Gina's tender nursing. They share one night of passion, then she disappears. When they meet again, circumstances have changed, and the woman of his dreams seems not to remember their time together.
Jan Cox Speas. Bride of the MacHugh. Avon. 1954. Historical Romance. You can still find this in used book stores, and it's well worth the hunt. A marvelous story set in Scotland of the kidnapper who can't let his captive go, even if it means becoming an outlaw.
Elizabeth George. A Great Deliverance. Bantam. 1988. British Detective Mystery. The first in an absorbing series that I read just to watch the interplay of the characters -- suave, yet vulnerable, Detective Thomas Lynley, his brash partner Barbara, the two women he has loved and his best friend.
Mary Balogh. Secret of the Heart. Signet. 1988. Regency. They were once married and divorced in a cloud of pain and anger. Years later, circumstances bring Sarah and George together to face their past and the love that still shimmers beneath the surface of pride and hurt.
